The painting Phryne Before the Areopagus

The painting “Phryne Before the Areopagus” is a famous work by French painter Jean-Léon Gérôme, completed in 1861. This work depicts the moment when the character Phryne, a Greek woman famous for her stunning beauty, stands before the Areopagus, a judicial body of ancient Athens.

According to legend, Phryne was charged with blasphemy, but when the situation became critical, her lawyer, Hyperides, stripped Phryne naked in court to highlight her divine beauty, which led to the court’s acquittal because they believed her beauty was proof of the gods’ grace.

This painting shows a strong contrast between Phryne, calm and confident in her nude pose, and the shocked and confused reactions of the council members.

Gérôme’s artistry in this work is known for its exquisite detail, subtle light and shadow, and balanced and vibrant composition, giving a sense of solemnity and drama to the scene.
